Applied Zoopharmacognosy

Allowing your dog to self-select remedies according to their individual needs

Applied Zoopharmacognosy (AZ) enables your dog to effectively self-medicate. The process involves offering a choice of plant extracts that would contain the same, or similar constituents to those found in an animal’s natural environment. As a result the animal is empowered to manage their own health, rather than having medications administered based upon oftentimes flawed perception or diganosis.

Animals in the wild have the opportunity to do this, and there have been many studies and examples demonstrating this.   For our pets we have unknowlingly taken this opportunity away. Remarkably, however, they do still retain this ability, almost like a "sixth sense", to know what they need to achieve a healthy balance.  When your dog drags you into a tasty patch of grass and carefully chooses the nicest strands to eat, and then purges;  or your cat rolls all over your peppermint plant, they are replicating the behaviour of their wild cousins.

An AZ session involves offering a variety of both nutritive and healing herbs, macerated oils and essential oils.  The session is then guided by your dog's selections - which are either inhaled, taken orally, or applied topically to wherever the dog indicates. It is truly an amazing and fascinating process to observe.

AZ can be used to support all health issues that are dogs encounter - both those that are visually obvious or easily diagnosed,  but also more importantly those that are eluding absolute diagnosis of cause. We often find that the selections are contrary to what are initially presumed based upon either previous veterinary treatment or client experience! And this gives us real insight into the cause of illness or issue, rather than simply the symptoms.

They may also be selected to help with emotional and behavioural issues such as seperation anxiety, fear and reactivity to other dogs/humans.

NOTE: it is important to note however that AZ selection is not a diagnosis, but merely signposting that may entail further action required with your Vet.

A pre-consultation form must be completed prior to any session. An initial consulation will also form a key part of the session. The session length is also dictated by the dog, who will very clearly indicate when they are done, but generally takes anything from 1 - 2 hours.

Prices start from €40 per session, depending on whether you are able to visit our premises or if you require us to travel to you (Travel is charged additionally). The price includes the use of all herbs/oils during the session, but we do not currently sell any oils or herbs that your dog may continue to work with post session.

To make a booking, please complete the consultation questionnaire  and email to holistichoundie@gmail.com

No medicinal properties are claimed for any of these items but they can help in the maintenance of good health. Whilst we are happy to discuss any problems you may be experiencing with you or your dogs, we are not allowed by law to either offer a diagnosis or prescribe any treatments and may only give general information and teach you how to look after your own pets. If you are in any doubt about the health of your animals you must always consult your vet in the first instance.

If you or  your pets are either trying to conceive, pregnant or lactating or taking prescribed or over the counter medicines or suffer from any allergies, sensitivities or on-going health problems then it is essential that you contact your vet or doctor as appropriate for advice before using any of the products
